Broan 659 Heater Fan and Light

Broan NuTone has long been an industry leader in residential ventilation products. Foggy windows, damp walls, and steamy mirrors are more then just a little annoying. If it is a continual problem in your home, it could indicate and contribute to mold and mildew problems in walls and insulation. While Broan offers a wide variety of ventilation solutions that can clear the air quickly and efficiently, they also offer combination units that can provide not only ventilation but fan forced heat for your bathroom as well. This Broan 659 is a heater, ventilation fan, and light in one economical and efficient ceiling unit.

We also sell the Broan 659 in project packs. What that means is if you're building or remodeling, you can purchase just the housing for this product which is the Broan 654H and have it installed. Once the ceiling is finished, you can come back and purchase the unit and the grille to be installed which is called the "659F Finish Pack". That way you don't have to have the unit and grille sitting around while you're doing your building/remodeling project.

Check out the features of the Broan 659 below and the manufacture pdf files under the "Resources" tab above including detailed installation instructions. If you have any questions, call one of bath fan specialists at 800-221-8227. Click "Add to Cart" to purchase the 659 Heater Fan and Light now.

Calculating CFM for your needs:

One of the main questions you may have when looking at a bath fan is how many CFM fan should I purchase? Broan provides you with a quick guideline. If your bathroom is under 100 square feet, the HVI recommends ventilation of about 1 CFM per square foot. If your bathroom is over 100 square feet it is a little trickier. You can take the number of bathroom fixtures and add them up to get the total ventilation rate:

  • Toilet 50 CFM
  • Shower 50 CFM
  • Bathtub 50 CFM
  • Jetted tub 100 CFM

If you would like to calculate the exact CFM requirements for the size of your bathroom, calculate the cubic feet of your room by multiplying the length, width and ceiling height of your room. Once this is calculated, multiply by .13 and round up to the next “ten.” Broan provides you with two examples:

  • Example 1: Bathroom with 8' ceiling: 7' wide x 9' long x 8' high x .13 = 66. Select a bath fan with at least 70 CFM.
  • Example 2: Bathroom with 9' ceiling: 10' wide x 9' long x 9' high x .13 = 105. Select a bath fan with at least 110 CFM.

One last thing to consider when selecting the CFM of a fan is the length of the duct runs and ductwork that turns before it reaches the exterior vent. If your airflow is restricted in any way, you will need a little additional CFM. Just as a car must slow down for a sharp corner, air decelerates when going through a turn in a duct run. It is important to have straight duct runs when possible and always use large radius turns, if you must have a turn. Rigid ductwork is optimal because airflow restriction is minimized. Flexible tubing may be convenient to install, but resistance is created as air is moved over the spiral metal frame of the tubing. With long duct runs or ducts with multiple turns, the fan works harder, noise increases, and fan performance (CFM) is compromised. Select a fan model with an even greater CFM ratio to compensate.

Blower Motor:

The Broan 659 is designed to be vented through the roof or wall. The motor assembly equipped in the 659 Heater, Fan, and Light Combo is designed to be plugged in, not hardwired, and completely removable making repair extremely simpler. The motor is permanently lubricated meaning you will not need to have oil on hand to maintain your bath fan. The blower motor is polymeric. The blower motor is designed so that is can be easily removed and replaced if necessary. If the motor starts to make excessive noise, just replace the assembly. You can help extend the life of your bathroom exhaust fan motor by cleaning the polymeric blower wheel periodically with a vacuum.

Housing:

Broan doesn't just stop their innovative designs at the motor. They take the entire assembly into account. The housing is a rugged, 26 gauge, galvanized steel construction providing excellent corrosion resistance. This housing features sturdy key-holed mounting brackets for easy installation. The tapered polymeric, 4” duct connector with tapered sleeve means you will not be bothered by the metallic clatter of a metal flapper. The housing included with the 659 can be installed in ceilings with up to a 12:12 pitch.

Light Fixture

The Broan 659 light is designed to use with a 100Watt Bulb that is not included.

Replacement Parts Available for the Broan 659 Heater/Fan/Light :

The motor is designed for continuous operation without lubrication making it extremely easy to maintain. If the motor starts making excess noise, replace the motor assembly for a practically brand new fan.
