Choosing the right powerhead can be a daunting task. Here's a list of features you should consider when buying a powerhead for your central vacuum system.
|
Electric or Air Turbine - One of the first things you need to decide is whether you want an electric or air turbine powerhead. Electric powerheads have their own motor and several hoses allow you to control the power to the powerhead motor from the handle switch, so you can turn off the agitator and use the powerhead with straight suction on hard flooring. Air Turbine powerheads are powered by the air of your central vacuum system and so when the system is on, the agitator of the powerhead is also moving. You cannot stop the agitator of an air turbine power head in the same way you can an electric powerhead. Both can do an adequate job at removing dirt from carpeting but if you have a significant amount of carpeting, very thick pile carpeting, or pet hair to deal with, you will find an electric powerhead to be a better choice for you. Because they have their own motor, they do have more power. |
Height Adjustment - The pile of your carpeting and the height adjustments are an important consideration. If you have high pile carpeting and the powerhead doesn't have the right height adjustments, you may find it very hard to push. Some powerheads have a floating head that automatically adjusts to different carpet heights and others have an adjustment you must manually set. Knowing the powerhead is adequate for your type of carpeting and that it will do an effective job and yet still be easy to push is important.
Roller brush quality - The roller brush in your powerhead is extremely important. Some roller brushes are made of high quality steel with sealed ball bearings while others are made of wood or aluminum. Some have replaceable brush strips so that when the powerhead wears, you only have to buy brushes, not a whole new roller brush.

Belt System - Belt designs for powerheads vary. Long ago, there was only one kind of belt in any vacuum, a flat belt but now there are three different designs: A Poly-V belt, a Cogged or Geared Belt, or a traditional flat belt system. Geared belts generally last much longer than a standard flat belt. Poly-V belts also last longer than a flat belt. Profile - Do you have low furniture in the carpeted areas of your home? You may want to consider a powerhead with a very low profile so you can easily vacuum under beds and furniture. Considering the height of your lowest furniture and the height of the powerhead may be important to you. |
Width - Powerheads come in a range of widths. Choosing the right width for your needs is important. Some customers prefer a narrow 10 inch powerbrush because they want to be able to get beside beds or other narrow places in their homes. Some prefer a wide 14 inch powerhead because they have alot of carpetingand want to clean more space in less time.
Weight - Maybe you have back trouble and need to carry the powerhead up and down stairs. If so, you may want to consider the weight of the powerhead as well. A lightweight powerhead that can still do the job you need may be an important feature for you to consider.

Headlight - Powerheads come with a light or without one. Whether you need a light depends on your home and you. Many times it's nice to light up the cleaning path especially if your eyesight isn't as good as it used to be. Having a headlight might keep you from picking up an object you shouldn't so you don't break a belt or just light a darker place in your home so you can see what you're doing. Maybe you want a light when cleaning under beds or other furniture. Noise Reduction - Not all powerheads are created equal when it comes to how much noise they generate. Some powerheads have been manufactured to reduce noise so you can vacuum even with a baby or elderly person sleeping. Be sure to think about your needs and whether the powerhead you choose is a quiet one. |
Wheels - Believe it or not the wheels of the powerhead are important. The wheels can make a difference in how the powerhead feels when you push it. Large rubber wheels may prevent any marking on hard floors and make it easier to push on carpeting.
Bumper - Running into furniture and baseboards is unavoidable when you vacuum. Some powerheads come with a wrap-around bumper so that you don't knick the paint on baseboards or damage furniture when you run into them.
Easy Wand Disconnect - Different manufacturers design the wand release from the powerhead differently. Some powerheads boast of the most easiest method of disconnecting the wands. If you use your central vacuum system alot for above the floor cleaning like dusting, cleaning blinds, etc., this may be an important feature for you to consider.

Motor Overload Protector - Some electric powerheads come with a motor overload protector. This means that if something gets caught in your roller brush like a tshirt or a small toy, the motor will automatically turn off so you don't burn out your powerhead motor or break the belt. With the simple reset switch, you can remove the object and then turn the powerhead back on. Edge Cleaning - Some powerheads come with dual edge cleaning meaning that special suction vents are included on the sides of the powerhead, not just the middle, so that as you run the powerhead, it will suck up the dirt even to the very edges. |
Swivel Neck - The neck of some powerheads swivel 90 or 180 degrees effecting how easily the powerhead can be maneuvered under and around furniture.
Dirt Sensor - Some powerheads even come with a dirt sensor where a light on the powerhead turns a certain color to tell you the cleaning path is clean.
