Benefits and Features of the Nutone 772RBNT Decorative Fan/Light:
Calculating CFM for your needs:
One of the main questions you may have when looking at a bath fan is how many CFM fan should I purchase? NuTone provides you with a quick guideline. If your bathroom is under 100 square feet, the HVI recommends ventilation of about 1 CFM per square foot. If your bathroom is over 100 square feet it is a little trickier. You can take the number of bathroom fixtures and add them up to get the total ventilation rate:
If you would like to calulate the exact CFM requirements for the size of your bathroom, calculate the cubic feet of your room by multiplying the length, width and ceiling height of your room. Once this is calculated, multiply by .13 and round up to the next “ten.” NuTone provides you with two examples:
One last thing to consider when selecting the CFM of a fan is the length of the duct runs and ductwork that turns before it reaches the exterior vent. If your airflow is restricted in any way, you will need a little additional CFM. Just as a car must slow down for a sharp corner, air decelerates when going through a turn in a duct run. It is important to have straight duct runs when possible and always use large radius turns, if you must have a turn. Rigid ductwork is optimal because airflow restriction is minimized. Flexible tubing may be convenient to install, but resistance is created as air is moved over the spiral metal frame of the tubing. With long duct runs or ducts with multiple turns, the fan works harder, noise increases, and fan performance (CFM) is compromised. Select a fan model with an even greater CFM ratio to compensate.
The NuTone 772RBNT Decorative Fan is designed to be vented through the roof or wall. The motor assembly equipped in the Nutone 772RBNT Fan Light Combo is designed to be plugged in, not hardwired, and completely removable making repair extremely simpler. The motor is permanently lubricated meaning you will not need to have oil on hand to maintain your bath fan. The blower motor is polymeric. The blower motor is designed so that is can be easily removed and replaced if necessary. If the motor starts to make excessive noise, just replace the assembly. You can help extend the life of your bathroom exhaust fan motor by cleaning the polymeric blower wheel periodically with a vacuum.
NuTone doesn't just stop their innovative designs at the motor. They take the entire assembly into account. The housing is a rugged, 26 gauge, galvanized steel construction providing excellent corrosion resistance. This housing features sturdy key-holed mounting brackets for easy installation. The tapered polymeric, 4” duct connector with tapered sleeve means you will not be bothered by the metallic clatter of a metal flapper. The housing included with the Nutone 772RBNT Fan can be installed in ceilings with up to a 12:12 pitch.
The Nutone 772RBNT decorative bath fan light combo has a corrosion resistant oil rubbed bronze finish with a white alabaster glass shade. The main grille pan mounts close to the ceilings. The NuTone 772RBNT is designed to use with two 13W, GU24 based, 3500K fluorescent bulbs (included) . The light fixture assembly can be easily plugged in and removed. The exhaust for the fan is located at the base of the fan around the light fixture where there are small vent openings.
Replacement Parts Available for the Nutone 772RBNT Decorative Fan/Light:
The motor is designed for continuous operation without lubrication making it extremely easy to maintain. If the motor starts making excess noise, replace the motor assembly for a practically brand new fan.
Switch Options for the NuTone 772RBNT Decorative Fan Light Combo:
The fan and light can be operated separately. Use a 2-function wall control. Do not use a dimmer switch to operate the light. See “Connect Wiring” for details in the attached installation manual under the "Resources" tab above. Use of speed controls other than the NuTone Models 78V and 78W may cause a motor humming noise.

If you are installing your 772RBNT bathroom exhaust fan in new construction follow step 2A. If you are installing in existing construction follow 2B. The first step when installing a bathroom fan whether in an existing home or new construction is to determine the best location for the fan. This involves selecting a location with the straightest and shortest duct run and effective location in your bathroom.
Note: The motor assembly can be removed from the housing to allow for a lighter easier installation. Ensure there is no power in the electrical lines you will be connecting to the fan.
See Image 1 and position your 772RBNT mounting brackets against the joist in a manner that allows the bottom edge of the housing to be flush against the finished ceiling.
The housing for the NuTone 772RBNT fan provides additional positioning features to account for 1/2", 5/8", 1", and 1-1/4" thick ceiling finish materials.
For ceilings with 1/2" thick materials, there are two tabs on the side of the housing that can be bent outward to 90 degrees. Once these are bent out lift the NuTone 772RBNT housing until the tabs are in contact with the underside of the ceiling framing.
For all other 5/8", 1", and 1-1/4" materials there are holes in the 772RBNT housing that indicates the various ceiling material thicknesses. Take the housing and position it so the bottom edge of the ceiling framing or joist is visible through the matched set of holes. Once the bottom edge is lined up with the desired hole, your housing is in the proper position.
Mark the keyhole slot on both mounting brackets.
|Step 2A.2||Set your 772RBNT housing aside and drive nails partially into the ceiling framing/joist at the top of both keyhole marks.|
|Step 2A.3||Hang your NuTone housing the nails and then pound tight. Once this is done, it is important to nail a second nail at the top hole in the top of each mounting bracket. This will help ensure that your NuTone 772RBNT exhaust fan is secure and will keep the noise level down.|
In the attic position the mounting bracket for your NuTone housing against ceiling framing/joist. Trace the housing on the ceiling material.
|Step 2B.2||Move the NuTone 772RBNT housing aside and cut the ceiling opening just a little larger than the marked size.|
|Step 2B.3||Position the housing in the opening so that the bottom edge is flush with the finished ceiling. Nail the housing to the ceiling framing/joist through the key hole on both sides of the NuTone housing. It's important after the first nails ate in to drive a second nail in the holes at the top of each mounting bracket. This will ensure the fan housing is secure and help keep the operation noise down.|
|Step 2B.4||Sometimes installing an exhaust fan from above can be a problem. NuTone provides you with additional mounting holes on the inside of the fan housing. This will allows you to nail or screw the fan to the ceiling joist from below.|
Snap the damper/duct connector to your NuTone housing. Ensure the tabs on the connector lock into the slots in the 772RBNT housing. The top of the damper/duct connector should be flush with the top of the housing. The damper should open freely.
Connect the duct to the damper/duct connector and extend to the roof or outside wall. Tape all duct connections to make sure they are air tight and secure.
Note: The NuTone 772RBNT damper is counter balanced. The flap will be in the "open" position approximately 1" when the duct connector is attached to the housing. This design of the damper allows for direct contact with the Fan/Light housing following UL standards. Any slight backdraft will force close the damper keeping air from entering.
Wire your new NuTone 772RBNT fan following the diagram in image 9. Run the electrical line as direct as possible and do not allow wires to touch the top or side of the housing before, during, or after installation.
|Step 4||If you removed the motor blower assembly during installation, reinstall now. Locate the grille pan of the 772RBNT fan over the housing and connect the wiring harness plug to the white receptacle in the fan housing. Insert the rod through the center hole in the grille pan. Use the included washer between the collar on the rod and pan. Thread the rod onto the projecting grille screw and screw until the grille pan is tight against the ceiling.|
Install the light bulb. Use 13 Watt Max GU24 Base, fluorescent bulbs with a maximum length of 4.8 inches or less in the NuTone 772RBNT Fan/Light. Restore the power and check operation.
Place the glass shade over the mounting rod and align shade onto the grille pan. Secure the glass shade to the grille pan before securing the finial cap and nut.
